The first Olmsted Scholarship will be awarded in spring of 2008. Given for
leadership and vision, the $25,000 Olmsted Scholarship will be the premier
award for landscape architecture students.
The goal of the Olmsted Scholars program is to
identify and support future leaders who are willing to engage current and
critical issues through the use of ideas, influence, communication, and
leadership, thus advancing sustainable planning and design and fostering human
and societal benefits.
LAF will initially use a two-stage selection process.
The first stage will involve inviting nominations from the faculty of each
LAAB-accredited school for a fourth or fifth year undergraduate or graduate
student. A second stage will incorporate a prestigious jury of three to five
leaders, who will create a shortlist of ten or fewer finalists. As the
program evolves, LAF envisions a final stage that would involve candidate
interviews by the jury, past Olmsted Scholars, or a combination of both.
The preliminary description of the scholarship is
currently undergoing review by invited faculty and professionals. Once the
details are finalized this fall, the scholarship will be announced and the
first scholarship awarded in 2008.
