New Case Study Looks at Community Gardens

A new case study on community urban gardens will be published this fall by the University of Washington Press. Entitled Greening Cities, Growing Communities: Learning from Seattle's Urban Community Gardens," the book focuses on cases of community gardens in Seattle where there has been a strong network of knowledge and resources.


 

The leadership of the Landscape Architecture Foundation officially transitioned on April 27 when the new executive director, Barbara Deutsch, ASLA, began work. Deutsch overlapped with Susan Everett for one week as part of the transition process. Both Deutsch and Everett participated in the April 30 LAF Executive Committee meeting in Alexandria, Virginia, which marked Everett's last day in the position.

This year 28 students in landscape architecture programs around the country have been named by their faculty as University Olmsted Scholars. These undergraduate and graduate-level students were selected for their exceptional leadership potential in advancing the role of sustainable planning and design. LAF's award program recognizes students who are at the forefront in engaging new ideas, research, communication and service which foster human and societal benefits.

Mark your calendars for LAF's 24th annual Benefit, Millennium Magic, to be held on Friday evening, September 18th, at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion Stage at Millennium Park. This year LAF is honored to have Landscape Forms as the Benefit's lead sponsor. Landscape Forms is a longtime major supporter of LAF and a leader and patron in the landscape architecture community.

LAF's latest Case Study will be published in fall 2009 by the University of Washington Press. Entitled Greening Cities, Growing Communities: Learning from Seattle's Urban Community Gardens, it is the fifth title to be published in LAF's Land and Community Design Case Study Series. The authors are Jeffrey Hou and Julie Johnson from the University of Washington and Laura Lawson from the University of Illinois.
