XTREME LA
A Creative Challenge for Emerging Design Leaders
September 10-12, 2008
New Buffalo, Michigan
The 2008 XTREME LA challenge ended successfully after three days of quick-thinking design work. The annual design event sponsored by Landscape Forms and the Landscape Architecture Foundation took place this year in New Buffalo, Michigan. The charrette’s goal was to develop plans and designs for a real-world urban revitalization project.
Twenty-seven emerging design leaders from firms around the country assembled in New Buffalo, a fast-growing resort community on Lake Michigan, about 70 miles from Chicago. Participants were divided into teams, led by renowned landscape architects and urban designers with extensive experience in urban revitalization projects worldwide. Each team developed a master plan to better integrate community focal points--such as the marina, beachfront park, and downtown shopping and entertainment--into the life of the city and to create lively interface with other new development.
The program's goal was to create themes and initiatives that leverage underused and poorly-connected resources to create a downtown experience that attracts people, supports Michigan's Cool Cities Program and makes New Buffalo a better place to live, work, learn and play.
