Since 1986, LAF’s Leadership in Landscape Scholarship Program has supported the education of new generations of landscape architects through named scholarships and fellowships. Nearly all are endowed awards established by companies, firms, and individuals.
For the last three years, LAF has awarded $40,000 to 10 students through 9 named scholarship and fellowships. LAF envisions increasing both the number of awards and the average award amount to keep pace with the increasing cost of education.
Establishing a scholarship is a great way to ensure that supporting the future leaders of the profession will be part of your legacy. LAF offers two ways to establish a scholarship:
Create a scholarship/fellowship with a one-time payment establishing an endowment. Endowments typically disburse 5% of their funds annually to protect the principal. Therefore, a $100,000 endowment would be needed to fund a $5,000 annual award.
Give an annual amount each year that will gradually build an endowment while providing an annual cash gift to award the scholarship. For example, if $25,000 per year were given for 10 years, the gift could be divided—with $20,000 building the endowment and $5000 directly funding the scholarship. After 5 years, the $100,000 endowment could award $5000/year at 5%.
The following options are available to all scholarship and fellowship sponsors:
- Option to name the scholarship in your or your firm’s name
- Option to help develop requirements and qualifications for scholarship award
- Option to assemble and manage the jury to determine award winner(s)
