Robert Douglas Lemon

Using the city of Oakland as our study area, we will measure individual as well as community perceptions of open space, valued space, streetscapes, neighborhood security, problematic and even pathological spaces. We will compare and contrast the relationship between the perception of space and what is observed in reality.
Employing a multivariate model and analysis we hope to better map the factors and relationships that impact people and their perceptions of space. We hope to test hypotheses and measure patterns that reveal the importance of economic, culture and other demographics in the perceptions of spaces. We hope to answer questions about landscape typology and/or the cultural construct of the spaces themselves. We hope to advance this study beyond pattern mapping to prediction of future demographic and cultural changes to better design for future use.

I plan to explore, document and present two of California’s most treasured outdoor spaces: the gardens of Mission La Purisima Concepcion and Mission Santa Barbara. I will be looking at these historic gardens through landscape representation, mapping, photography, painting and intaglio printmaking. I hope to portray the gardens in a way that will engender future exploration and preservation of these valuable cultural resources.
