James Schissel is researching the plant trade in 19th century America and how its physical and social manifestations shaped the American landscape. He is focusing specifically on the work of Thomas Affleck (1812-1868), an agricultural reformer and horticulturist who owned Southern Nurseries, one of the earliest commercial plant nurseries in the lower Mississippi Valley.
