Practice-Based Research Now: Perspectives, Paradigms, and Possibilities

As today's landscape architects are increasingly called to address climate change impacts, biodiversity loss, and complex social issues in their project work,  the role of research in landscape architecture offices is more important than ever. A growing number of design firms are integrating research more intentionally into their practice, pursuing their own research projects, and collaborating with academic colleagues to generate new knowledge.

In this webinar, seven leading practitioners and LAF staff explore the importance and implications of pursuing research in practice, identify opportunities, and discuss common barriers and how they can be overcome. After a brief summary of models for how firms are integrating research in practice, the format was a guided panel discussion . The webinar is a companion to the open-access Landscape Journal article “Practice-Based Research Now” (November 2024), written by the webinar panelists, which makes an impassioned case for the importance of practice-based research.

This webinar is intended for practitioners who hope to be more active participants in knowledge creation for the discipline of landscape architecture as well as students interested in pursuing research in their future careers within professional practice. Above all, the webinar expands the dialogue and reinforces the need for new paradigms, partnerships, and approaches to generate the knowledge that is most needed by today’s landscape architects.
